If you are reading this blog then you probably have young children. As a mother of school aged children and now an infant it is easy for me to reflect on things that I missed or did not take seriously the first time around, like access to pertinent information about poison control centres.

In Canada National Poison Prevention Week was March 14th to 20th, while in the USA it was from March 20th -26th 2011.  I was happy to find a lot of useful information, and statistics that I did not know before. As a new mom, I have a million things on my mind. New moms are likely sleep-deprived and anxious about our new baby's feeding habits as well as their growth, illnesses and basic health and safety issues, but what about the bigger things? Yes, there are bigger things. For example, is your CPR updated, are your medications in a locked cabinet?

Often parents, and care-givers think of poison control in the terms of children ingesting chemicals, but this is far from the reality of situations that I have heard about. Some of the cases that I have heard about are children drinking too much cough syrup or parents giving children higher doses of medication (based on their age/weight etc).

So what exactly is poisoning? A poison is any substance, including medications, that is harmful to your body if too much is eaten, inhaled, injected, or absorbed through the skin. Any substance can be poisonous if too much is taken. Generally speaking, poisonings are either intentional or unintentional. However, unintentional poisoning is usually the case for children, especially young children.

With a little Rainbow around, who I am sure will be the biggest busy-body ever, I am very  anxious to prepare the family for anything. I hope we will never have to use this information, but I wanted to pass on the information to you all. I found the sites below very useful and accessible.

Bismillah...

Ok, so we're busy moms. I won't say "working moms" because I think it's redundant don't you?  The day is too short...or too long, depending how you look at it;  the kids are bothering you,  you have a severe head-ache, dinner's not ready...it's going to be a horrendous evening. But what can you do?

My little guy is only a few months old so I don't expect him to sit quietly upon my command. However, for older children, why not Dial-a-Story?
Yes, you heard me right.
The Toronto Public Library offers a great reading program that I think is wonderful. The initiative, a multilingual telephone story service for children is becoming increasingly popular with parents of young children.

On the Toronto Public Library site, it states that they answered 300,000 calls last year. The Dial-A-Story program  has stories in English, French, Cantonese, Gujarati, Italian, Mandarin, Polish, Portuguese, Somali, Spanish, Tamil and Urdu, and there is the promise of more languages to be added later.

My Thoughts:

This is an excellent way to get kids involved in a love of reading.  In addition, most often women are the story-tellers of young children. I chose to listen to stories in both French and English. The tone and pace was just right for the age group (7 and under). I was pleasantly surprised that both men and women tell the stories, and do so in a way that is captivating for smaller children.
As much as we moms want and need time alone, I would not use this service as a replacement for "real" story-time. However, stories are 5 minutes or less, so it makes for a nice pause in a hectic schedule for both you and the kids.

Interested?
There are different stories every day and parents can choose for younger children (7 and under) and for older children (up to 12).
Call: Dial-A-Story (416-395-5400) 24 hours a day.

Stay tuned for other reading program reviews.

Bismillah...
I am happy to say that Rainbow and I have explored many sites and I cannot wait to give you all my feed-back on some of them. My dh (dear hubby) has agreed to help me review some of the Arabic and Islamic sites that I found.
Today Rainbow and I started the day off on a great note, alhamdullelah. When he is awake, I must give him my complete attention, so I sat down and shared some videos with him, and read to him.
For some reason, I can't think of what it is now, I decided I would look at a journal that I kept after my son Hussein died and I cannot believe how far I have come (emotionally, physically, spiritually), everything.

I am happy to have my Rainbow baby and really look forward to helping him grow.
As I also teach my daughter Amira at home, sometimes, I have a difficult time making him a priority. Having this blog as a journal is helpful, because when I look back on my days, I am amazed what I accomplish or don't in any given day.
Rainbow is five months old now. I still cannot believe it. We didn't even wait that long before we were able to have him, but I was so impatient and afraid of the unknown. Now he is sitting up, and grabbing things, and shaking his rattle and laughing so loud, I can't help but laugh with him (even when I have no idea why he's laughing).

His eyes light up when I enter a room, and he is always searching for his daddy's voice. He loves to hang out with Amira, who is always doing something silly, and he likes to be rocked to sleep by Iman. He sees his grand-parents (my inlaws) on Messenger , and he sees my parents as well. I think he is starting to remember people, but I can't be sure.

There is one funny thing that I must note. When he is screaming or crying, I often say "La" (no). This annoys him to no end of course, because nobody (even babies) like to hear the word "No". However, if I say "...la habibi", then he smiles or laughs. I don't really know what the difference is...maybe I say it in a nicer tone, lol.
Rainbow also enjoyed his first Earth Day. It was very nice. We actually stayed in and lit candles and he was in awe of all the glowing candles everywhere.

I hope you all had a great week-end.

Bismillah...

I am on the hunt for new spring jackets and have been asking my daughters for their opinions. I love Spring and Fall jackets the most. I love the lines, the colours and the weight is not too bulky. I also like some of the clothes for kids as well, which (if I may say), has changed drastically since I was a little girl.
Next week, I hope to showcase some cool kiddie finds, but this week's stage is set for moms...

I found these awesome Escada jackets in a new site that I have joined here.  They fit my style perfectly, however, the only disappointed is the lack colour. The second jacket jumped out at me because of the colour, length and style. I'm excited to shop for some new jackets for my Spring wardrobe.

What about the feet?

After months of pregnancy, I need shoes that are comfy and durable. I have 2 pairs of these shoes (gift from my mom) and I love them. I only wish that they were more dressy.
Find it here.

Do you have a favorite pick for spring?

    Bismillah...
I want to share kid-friendly recipes before the week-end so I figure Thursday is the best day to update you on my newest kitchen adventure.

For hubby's birthday in January snowballs was on the menu; that's Spiced Coconut Snowballs if you dare, and they were delicious. I actually found the recipe in Today's Parent magazine, and was happy that I had most of the ingredients in my cupboard. In fact, the only thing that I needed was vanilla extract.

This is a fun recipe for a Saturday afternoon with the kids. Try it.  Go over to my page for the full recipe.

    Bismillah...

Awww, the beginning of Spring. The days are getting longer; how wonderful is that? The air is breezy, the rain has left behind little reminders...lots of little, and not so little puddles. I took Rainbow outside in his stroller (of course) and for the first time since he was born he was uncovered. He had quite a little shock at first, but when he felt the warmth on his face he too began to smile.

For the next few days I think our un-schooling journey should focus on the beautiful balance of nature. I plan to marvel at the beauty of nature with Rainbow. I will take him outside for his daily dose of sunshine, plus, a view of everything that he's been missing with all the bundling up over the Winter.

    Spring is on its way.

    Bismillah...

When I first started this blog it was in an effort to gather tools and materials to home school my daughter Amira. When she returned to school, I turned my focus to Rainbow, who was a few weeks old at the time. This blog is special to me because it's all about Rainbow and our Islamic and un-schooling journey. When I first began to search for Islamic themes and ideas, I was quite overwhelmed, however, I soon found that everything that I was doing was what I wanted to share with my baby, and that it was all a process.

I am an un-schooling mom who loves all things adventurous. This blog stems from my journey in teaching my kids to participate in playful world-travel in everything they do.

I believe in the philosophy of life long learning, and have always strive to take the initiative when it comes to educating my children. I take the Un-schooling approach because I want to use various methods, and incorporate every aspect of life into my teaching, without limiting my children in their lessons.

I do not consider myself a full-time home-schooling mom, because I work full-time, however, presently I am on Maternity leave which has allowed me to explore different avenues with my Rainbow.

I am in the process of compiling a list of videos and games for Rainbow as a way to teach him at a young age. The main focus on this blog is to continuously find ways to interact with Rainbow, but more importantly, gather a tool of very specific visuals for him.

I focus mainly on French here because it is difficult to attain good French education in the English system here.
I am adding Arabic videos that are focused on Islam, rather than than the Arabic language, which (as a non-Arabic speaker). I hope family will help me with, InshaAllah.

Otherwise, please look around and learn a little, and do pass it on.

     Why I'm Here
Life after loss changed my whole family. You can read a bit about it here. My blog is my outlet. My days are up and down, but I'm happy to be where I am, know what I know, and understand the importance of humility and grace.
    What I love to do
Sometimes I have to remember to catch my breath and just enjoy life and count my blessings. I believe in the philosophy of un-schooling, however, I try not to put my foot in one specific circle. I like to take the cue from my children, they are great teachers. I don't think it is ever too early to begin teaching children, thus, this blog stems from my commitment and love of teaching and watching my children grow.

I find that I learn the most from watching Rainbow, and trying to keep up with him. Come watch me make sense of our journey as I prepare him for an Islamic life filled with cultural differences, languages and various teaching techniques. You will find resources and articles written by me. You will also find recipes, product reviews, educational links for your young one, and fun videos to play and share.

This blog is only one aspect of my teaching, and it will grow and change as Rainbow grows. Unschooling means being very hands-on, thus, my computer time will be very limited, but if you have questions or comments, I will be happy to answer them.

Rainbow will be very busy in 2012, inshaAllah.  The Bucket List Project here is a way to keep track of the little milestones, as well as creating fun adventures for the family. Want to join in? Link up and share what your little one will be doing, inshaAllah.

    Bismillah...

    Our Philosophy: Playful World Travelling
I love and loved reading Maria Lugones influential paper about playful world travelling. She speaks about the experience of those outside the mainstream (which I have seen is very tricky) and how they navigate and come to a place of consciousness.  I've always liked the idea of identifying one's social location, but when Lugones says that that women of colour practice world traveling out of necessity...I get it...I know what she is saying.

One of Lugones' request is that women of colour learn to travel to each other's world, in the art of Play world travelling. I am a mom facing many 'multis' as we like to refer to our home-life. My children are thus faced with multiple barriers and opportunities. Some of their locations force them to climb fences, knock down walls, and re-direct their journey through various avenues and crossroads. These identities however, also allow my children to navigate certain spaces that others cannot connect to, and find new adventures in the many people and places that they come in contact with, mashaAllah.

What I also love about the art of Playful World Travelling is that Lugones spins a take on Marilyn Frye's notion of "arrogant perception" and the failure to identify with those who are different from us. I take these views very seriously because I think like all parents I want to teach my children how to identify with and commit to loving others out of respect rather than pity.

In essence, Lugones and Frye are feminists. Teaching my children and showing them how to look at the world has nothing at all to do with feminism, but rather, humanity (I guess), if I have to name it.
The art of "world" travelling is beautiful, because the purpose of it is to help people to understand the reality of other people’s experiences in every single aspect of life.

    Read our Diversity Statement here.
